PA’s Coaltition for Nurse Practitioners

9 May

The Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners is a website dedicated to nurse practitioners and protecting the rights and improving communication with nurse practitioners, as well as much more. This site was very overwhelming to dig through at first. You can become a member of this site if you are a student nurse practitioner. Two links I found most beneficial not yet being a nurse practitioner or a student NP was the “What is a Nurse Practitioner” link and “Find a Nurse Practitioner Link”. I can see how this website would be beneficial to nurse practitioners because it does have articles that are related to the advancement of nurse practitioners, a recent one being on Highmark recognizing nurse practitioners are primary care providers.

Advantages & Disadvantages

9 May

The Nurse Practitioner Zone website is an article about becoming a nurse practitioner. What they are, the advantages and disadvantages to nurse practitioners. The part of the article I find most effective is “They have the ability to diagnose and treat health problems and provide a different approach from that of physicians. They treat patients by providing care that fulfills their emotional and physical needs”. I believe this says a lot about nurse practitioners right there because they do care about the emotional aspects of patients, not just treating medical conditions. This is a very well written article for nurses thinking about becoming nurse practitioners since it lists advantages and disadvantages. One thing that I do not think would need to be in the article is when it mentions this is not the job for you if you are not a people person. That would be for most nursing jobs in general, and one would realize that long before they hit the courses needed to become a nurse practitioner. One should realize they are not a people person during their first clinical in becoming an RN, as they are communicating with their patients while bathing them.

Ideas for Schools

5 May

This website, Nurse Practitioner, is a website that tells about nurse practitioners. The difference between this website and many others is that it also has a link to some of the best online schools and best campus based nurse practitioner programs. This website is very helpful, to nurses looking to continue their education solely because it has schools listed. Without the list of schools this website would be like most other websites with the basic what is a nurse practitioner information

Oh the places to work & things to do!

This section of Exploring Health Careers on nurse practitioners is a good informational article on the types of positions nurse practitioners have. It is not a long article so it will not be too long for people to read, but it offers more information that other websites I have reviewed in it’s short article. The most effective part of this article is how much it lists, with the list of all the types of places NPs can work and all the things that NPs can do. This article will benefit nurses who are unsure of what they want to do with their nursing careers.

Brain & Heart

This picture I found at http://sarcasmshop.com/image.php?type=P&id=17585 is exactly what I think about nurse practitioners. I believe nurse practitioners are just as good as doctors when it comes to assessing, diagnoses and caring for patients. More difficult cases do need to be referred to physicians, yes. The difference between nurses and physicians is that nurses have a nursing background. The basis of a nursing background is not a medical diagnosis; nurses treat the patient as a whole, mind-body and soul. Some of the first things one learns in nursing school are to change a bed and give a bath. This shirt embodies a nurse practitioner perfectly.

Day in the Life of a Nurse Practitioner

5 May

Triumphs and Tribulations of A New Nurse Practitioner is a blog posted by a nurse practitioner in trainer. Although by her recent posts it sounds as though she is working, so she may not have updated her “about me”. This was a fun blog to read. She is down to earth and truthful about her days. This blog would appeal to other nurse practitioner students, older nurse practitioners who want to get a kick out of the newer NP’s and nurses who want to read about the day in the life of a nurse practitioner. I do not think people out of the medical field would find this blog interesting. Taking from her most recent post “They ask the story and I tell them what happened. At the mention of the words “anxiety attack”, their interest cools considerably…. I pass this information along to the now bored EMTs”. Non-medical people may not appreciate the statement of medical professions becoming bored with a patient.

Just on a side note, I have saved this blog to read on my own time!

Joy Elwell, FNP

5 May

This website is all about Joy Elwell, a family nurse practitioner who owns her own practice. Although, I could not get an appointment with her because she is located in New York, this is a great website. As a visitor to this website you can learn about nurse practitioners. As a patient of hers you can schedule appointments. As a nurse you can see what the potential for becoming a nurse practitioner has. It is user-friendly and easy to manage. This website will entice all who visit it.
